Human Union Movement – History

Although cosmopolitan political thought can be traced back thousands of years the Human union Movement itself is a relatively new group trying to promote global justice in the 21st century.

The Human Union Movement was first proposed by Lyndon Storey in 2005. There were several key reasons behind the proposal:

  • To provide an umbrella group for those who supported a move beyond the system of sovereign states to some form of legitimate democratic global governance, but were more concerned with the principle of this than being tied to any one particular model of democratic world federation or government.
  • To develop a policy proposal which could provide an achievable bridge between the world as it is, and a world political system which respected the dignity of all human beings. Too many organizations have proposed ideal systems of world government without developing any achievable bridging proposal to take us from the world as it is in the direction of a better world. A Human Union Declaration is the bridging proposal that the Human Union Movement currently proposes.
  • To provide an umbrella group for those who agree with the human legitimacy principle, or something similar, to develop a sense of community and purpose.

(Although these goals are compatible with the philosophy set out in Lyndon Storey’s book “Humanity or Sovereignty” the Human Union Movement functions independently and many Human Unionists do not accept all the concepts of that book. In fact one of Lyndon Storey’s stated ambitions is for the Human Union Movement to grow to the point where he can relinquish all leadership roles and just be a supporter.)

Through 2006 to 2010 the Human Union Movement has slowly added supporters who participated in public demonstrations in Australia and published a number of articles calling for the building of a Human Union.

Today the Human Union Movement has supporters in more than ten Countries and a facebook group with hundreds of members. But while the Human Union Movement has grown the urgency of its message has not changed. We need to build a Human Union to bring an end to the civil war of humanity.
